Multiculturality of FASHION

DESI and CASA on the CATWALK

Folks wishing to delve into multicultural education are tasked not only to define their own cultural biases and identify "the other," but also to determine how deeper cultural understanding can be achieved through sustained exposure to a variety of cross-cultural experiences (E. Hoffman & F. Chalmers, 1997).  And what an experience it was indeed to spot new textures, colors and fabrics that glimmered with the bops and fashion steps on the catwalk during last quarter’s round of cultural fashion shows organized by the student clubs DESI (Developing and Educating South-Asian Ideologies) and CASA (Caribbean African Students’ Assembly).

The events have become not merely awaited celebrations of diversity on campus but as well opportunities to soft sell among peers and fellows, peoples’ regional histories and cultures, the sagas and successes of persons of color.  The events organized by DESI and CASA were proof indeed that learning about others’ cultures can be made more possible and fun and artistic too.

Incidentally, CASA gave out the "Planting the Seeds" awards this year to OME's Amie Archambault and co-chair Felecia Jeter.
