LGBTQ+ Worcester – For the Record
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the
Stonewall Riots – the 1969 protest actions in response to the violent police
raids against gay communities in New York – the Worcester Historical Museum (WHM)
sets up an exhibit dubbed “LGBTQ+ Worcester – For the Record.” The ongoing exhibit which is held in
partnership with the College of the Holy Cross, Clark University, Worcester
Polytechnic Institute and Digital Worcester among others, showcases the city’s
engagement in LGBTQ issues through the years and specifically includes a collection
of photographs and objects of interests that represent the gay movement of
Worcester. Organizers hope to expand the
exhibit to include a bigger collection of oral histories, the creation of an
LGBTQ+ archive, and educational programming to complement greater awareness and
support for gay rights.
In support of LGBTQIA efforts, the Office of
Multicultural Education (OME) issued campaigns in time for the LGBTQIA Heritage
Month and Coming Out Day in October and as well as for the Transgender Day of
Remembrance in November to honor those whose lives have been lost due to anti-transgender
violence.
